Find your perfect base layer
The right base layer is the secret to a great outdoor experience, whatever the weather or activity. We offer four different options – from 100% merino wool to synthetic base layers – each with unique properties for warmth, breathability and moisture management. In this guide, we’ll help you find the base layer that best matches your activity level and the conditions you’ll be heading out in.
100% Merino Wool
There are many reasons why we love wool. It naturally regulates your body temperature to keep you comfortable in changing conditions: it helps keep you cool on warm days and insulates you when temperatures drop. Wool also has the unique ability to keep you warm, even when it gets wet.
If you’re doing activities that make you sweat a lot, or there’s a risk of rain, wool absorbs moisture while still helping you stay warm. In fact, wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture while still feeling dry.
Wool base layers are also perfect for camping trips because wool is naturally odour-resistant and doesn’t need to be washed as often. Simply hang your wool base layer out to air, and it will feel fresh again the next day.
Wool’s natural breathability also makes it incredibly comfortable to be active in, helping prevent you from feeling clammy.
Conclusion: If you’re heading out on longer mountain adventures in changing weather, choose a wool base layer.
Natural Wool Blend
Our natural wool blends are made from an optimal combination of natural fibres and are perfect for days when the temperature drops and the intensity rises. By combining wool with TENCEL™ Lyocell, an eco-conscious fibre made from sustainably sourced wood, these wool blends are lightweight, highly durable and incredibly soft against the skin.
We recommend our natural blends as a lighter winter base layer for more high-intensity activities.
Synthetic Wool Blend
Our synthetic wool blends combine the best of both worlds – natural and synthetic fibres come together to create some of our most technical base layers. Designed for high-intensity activities, they feel soft against the skin while delivering excellent moisture management, quick-drying performance and temperature regulation.
We recommend our synthetic wool blends for high-intensity activities such as cross-country skiing, trail running, hiking and other activities where you need your base layer to perform.
Synthetics
Synthetic base layers are typically made from fibres such as polyester, often combined with elastane for stretch and unrestricted movement. This makes them ideal for high-intensity activities, as they efficiently wick moisture away from the skin, dry quickly, are durable and feel comfortable during training.
